1. Product Overview
The AXR series represents the latest generation of multipurpose rib-cooled motors, offering high power density, easy configurability, and built-in serviceability. These motors incorporate years of experience in electric motor manufacturing and set a new industry benchmark by delivering more watts per kilogram than ever before achieved with rib-cooled designs.
High power density means that for a given output, you can often use a motor one frame size smaller than with conventional products — saving space and enabling more compact installations.
AXR motors comply with major industry standards including API 541 and Shell DEP, as well as customer-specific requirements. They feature a rugged cast iron frame and are available with IC411 cooling and IP55 protection as standard. Optional configurations include IC416 cooling and IP66 protection, with IP66 verified by a leading independent testing organization.
The AXR series covers outputs up to 1,800 kW, with shaft heights from 315 to 500 mm. Motors can be mounted horizontally or vertically, and the catalog provides technical data at both 50 Hz and 60 Hz for synchronous speeds from 500 to 3,600 rpm.
2. Mounting Arrangements
Standard mounting arrangements for AXR motors:
- IM B3 (IM 1001): Standard floor mounting with feet facing downwards (horizontal foot-mounted).
- IM V1 (IM 4011): Flange and free shaft end facing downwards (vertical solid shaft, flange-mounted).
- IM B35 (IM 2001): Foot-and-flange-mounted horizontal configuration with the flange as part of the end-shield, one cylindrical shaft extension, and feet facing downwards.
- 3. Enclosure and Cooling
- Standard Combinations: IC411 / IP55
- AXR motors feature an external shaft-mounted fan that uses ambient air for cooling. The motors are protected against dust ingress and water jets.
- Optional: IC416 / IP55
- AXR motors are also available with IC416 cooling, where an additional motor drives the cooling fan — ideal for low-speed applications, especially when the motor is fed via a variable speed drive.
- Protection Rating IP55:
- Dust protection: Some dust may enter but not in quantities sufficient to interfere with operation.
- Water protection: Water projected by a nozzle from any direction has no harmful effect.
- Protection Rating IP66 (Optional):
- Dust protection: The enclosure is completely dust-tight.
- Water protection: Water projected in powerful jets (12.5 mm nozzle) from any direction has no harmful effect.
- Cooling Method (IC411):
- Frame Surface Cooled: Primary coolant circulates in a closed circuit within the motor, transferring heat through the external surface (including ribs) to the surrounding ambient air.
- Self Circulation: Coolant movement depends on the rotational speed of the main motor, driven either by the rotor itself or by a fan/pump unit mechanically coupled to the rotor.
